Digital publishing: websites, intranets and content support

Our platforms

Oxweb

Oxweb is the main University website (www.ox.ac.uk) and is used for central content including research, admissions, news and campaigns. It is managed by the Public Affairs Directorate in collaboration with relevant services and departments. Oxweb is often the first interaction that prospective students and external stakeholders will have with the University. It therefore plays a valuable role in providing key services, as well as enhancing our reputation. New content for Oxweb must align with the University’s content strategy.

Fresco

Fresco is Oxford’s new content management system (CMS) provides an updated, unified solution for departments, colleges and other University units, offering improved design consistency, governance and accessibility to deliver a high-quality user experience. It is replacing the Mosaic platform, and will be hosted centrally by IT Services, so local units won’t need to manage their own infrastructure. Most new websites will be built in Fresco, unless there is a clear reason to use something else.

OxIntranet

OxIntranet is the new University-wide intranet, bringing together all the internal information staff and students need to work and study on a single, secure and user-friendly platform, tailored to individuals within Oxford’s unique structure.

Built on SharePoint technology, it offers a high-quality experience for both content creators and end users. Publishing will be simpler, content easier to find, and everything will be underpinned by accurate, up-to-date people data – so that news, resources and announcements can be targeted to the right audiences, like your department, college or division.

OxIntranet will be rolling out through the 2025/26 academic year, following its initial launch in early Michaelmas term 2025. More content will be added gradually over the course of the year.

Students can use the app on Apple or Android devices, or via a web browser, and access it using their Single Sign-On (SSO).

Requesting a new site or intranet

The University’s content strategy provides clarity around principles and processes for those publishing online web and intranet content. A new request process ensures clarity and efficiency for content creators, while enhancing consistency and user experience across the University’s digital platforms and limiting our exposure to security and other risks.

Please visit the Requests for new websites and intranets page if you’d like to make a request or find out more about the process.

Key guidance:

  • All new intranet sites should be on OxIntranet.
  • All new websites should be on Fresco except in exceptional cases.
  • 'Central’ content should generally be part of (or under the umbrella of) the main Oxford University website (Oxweb).

The University's new webCMS, Fresco, will evolve to offer increasing functionality over time after its launch. Due to the agile process of developing Fresco, readiness for new sites to be produced on Fresco rather than Mosaic will depend on their complexity. Alternative options may be appropriate for new websites during this period.
